TRIFLES.... what is the story about?

Hi guys! To round up the analysis of the play Trifles, I would like you to comment on the theme/s the story covers. I will start by stating one of the topics presented to the reader:
* Empowerment of the female gender.
Looking forward to reading you all.

  1. Well, I think that this is a topic very interesting, and that there are a lot of things to consider while talking about this. First of all, it is important to take into account that nowadays there are far less discrimintaiton towards females than there used to be. In the past, (as we can see in TRIFLES) a woman was supposed to stay at home, take care of children and do the cleaning. Women were not supposed neither to work, nor to THINK. The husband was the one who ruled the house, the money, and the LIFE.
But fortunately, things are different now. We only have to think of our female president. Women’s role has changed. Now we have more independence, because we showed that we CAN think and act by ourselves. An important point to take into account is WORK. Have people of the 18th century ever thought of a woman working in a gas station, for example? The answer is surely not. But as I said before, there have been a lot of changes and improvements in society. Although there are a lot of things to catch up and to discuss, I think that nowadays we are getting closer and closer to have the same opportunities as the other gender. That is why I can say that I definitely agree on the idea that there has been an important empowerment of the female gender..
That’s all, hope you like it. Bye!

  2. Good afternoon!
As we have talked in class, one of the most important themes is, as Liliana says, the empowerment of the female gender and the things that are connected to women’s life, for instance, kitchen’s things, quilts, a pretty box, food preservers and sewing things. Those objects are considered as trifles or trivial for men who also tend to belittle women. Furthermore, men do not pay attention to details and they tend to laugh at women’s commentaries or opinions. However, when it is time to solve Mini’s case, the misses are the ones who find all the clues and the key evidences, as the little bird dead and the pretty box.
After reading the play, I consider that Susan Glaspell tries to show women how important we are and that we should not let men mistreat us or underestimate us. They do not have any power over us. Both genders are equal and their roles should be respected.

  3. Hi friends!!!
I agree with you! GIRLS POWER! (be careful Cristian!!)
I would talk about another topic which is present in the play. I refer to revenge.
Can we say that Minnie took revenge in name of her bird? Were there women brave enough to do such thing? Well, I believe so. I can't imagine myself living in Minnie's situation. I would have killed my husband too!!!! (Just kidding).
About women's role, I would like to add that we do have the same possibilities that men have, the fact is that maybe we do not take advantage as they do.
I want to share with you a feminist slogan, suggesting that men are superfluous to women's needs: "A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle".
Anyway, I just posted it to laugh. I definitely think that men need us, a lot. They cannot live with us, but they cannot live without us (What do you think Cris??).
    Have a nice weekend!!
    Let's support Argentina on Saturday!!!
    Bye!!!

  4. Hi everybody!!!
It is really true to say that this is a feminist play since it fosters the reader to consider the idea that women have a tremendous power. Not only power to face life on their own, but also power to solve situations including a murder, although there is no man who gives any woman credit for this.I can´t agree more with you all when it comes to women´s behaviour, paying attention to details, taking care of the children and the house, but I believe that it is also in those details that we can find a terrific inspiration and strength to face either life or any men who mistreat or underestimate us.
    Kisses to all!
    Enjoy your winter holidays!!!!
    See U

  5. Hello class! Another comment to comment! Ja This blog is always active!
Talking about “Trifles” I can say that the most important topics, as Liliana and Loli posted, are empowerment of the female gender and revenge. I completely go along with Vale´s point of view. Fortunately women´s position has changed. Nowadays we have more independence and suffer less discrimination; however “machist” society still exists. This machismo is seen when the men looked down on Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters, because they thought that these women were not capable of thinking, of solving a case; they just were needed in the kitchen. But, at the end, it is shown that it was the other way round. Women were the ones who discovered the key of the case and men were useless. As a conclusion, I would say that we are as powerful as men! We are courageous, we can think, we can solve problems and even we are really important in men´s lifes!
Well, have a nice looooong holydays!!!! I´ll miss you…

  6. Hi there again! lol. Well, let's see if you go along with me on this. To my mind, women's role in the play is the most crucial topic of all. Womnen are most of the time taken for granted. As Bibi expressed, women are underestimated. They should not be this way because women are the most powerful characters in the play since they were the ones who took care of their family. Perfect mothers and wives! In Minnie's case, she endured allher husband's bad treatment towards here. Besides, she was strong enough to cope with this situation for a long long long time until it was impossiblle to hold all the anger she had inside her heart.

    That's all folks!

See ya. Have an amazing WINTER BREAK!!!

  7. Hello mates!we don´t stop blogging even in the winter holidays!as luz said, this blog is always creative!jaj.
This is the moment in which we have to close our comments on this interesting play "Trifles".I really go along with Cintya when she said that the most important topic the play deals with is the role women play not only in this play but also in society. My guess is that from a deeper analysis, the play deals with stereotypes in society:The fact that men are always the ones who are active and,on the contrary, women have a more passive and submissive role. Those women were thought not being capable of dealing with such difficult situation and men,who took the active role, found really difficult the case.In consecuence, women ended up to be more useful than men.In pite of the fact that I am a man,I don´t like jovanism at all and,as luz said, fortunately women´s position in society is changing.
Bye everybody and have a good sunday!

  8. Hello class! I think that the play “Trifles” is very interesting and I enjoyed a lot reading it.
I agree with Liliana about the theme the play covers. The Empowerment of the female gender is a very important topic in the story, but I think that there are others such as Men’s Arrogance and Cruelty or Women’s Bravery. In the play, the last one is the consequence of the first one. There are two examples: firstly, Minnie Foster took revenge on her husband because he had been mean with her and had killed her pet. And secondly, the men laughed at the two women, Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale because they thought that the women are arguing over “rifles” while they were looking for evidence with an arrogant attitude. However, the two ladies discovered the conclusive proof and hid them from the men.
Another theme could be the relationship between husband and wife in those times. It is clear that the story takes place in a patriarchal society which was rule and controlled by men and in which women had to stay at home doing the housework.
    Enjoy your winter holiday!!!!

  9. the play trifles is a great example of how our male chauvinist society works. women, no matter their intelligence, have always being underestimated and, though the situation nowadays has improved, there are still some aspects and estereotypes that should be modified. For example, the fact that women are always thought to be the ones in charge of cooking and cleaning the house, which is not fair at all. Another example could be that women are always considered to be terrible drivers, which is definitely not true.
